Match Report
Swanage & Fareham 20 – 45 Bognor Veterans
Bognor Veterans embarked on their annual weekend tour to Weymouth determined to keep their winning streak over the past few years going, and did so in emphatic style with a great second half performance.
The tourist again attacked hard, the pack dominated the phase play before unleashing their potent backline to attack. Mark Gordon probed and weaved his way up field before releasing flying winger Chris Pigden, his perfect pass to the ever supporting Tony Johnston and a clever off load to Williams secured another great flowing try.
Bognor were not to have it their own way all half as Fareham found a weakness at scrum half where Paul Mitchell had a less successful day. His misunderstanding with stand in number 8 Steve Worthington lead to all 3 of the Fareham first half tries and Bognor found themselves trailing at half time 15 – 12
Lewin rang the changes at half time, banishing P Mitchell to the sideline and bring on older brother Nigel, who proceeded to show his brother how it was done with a man of the match performance, alone with a host of experienced players and utilising the squad of 25 players.
John Baldwinson dominated the line out all day, and a perfect catch and drive had the try line begging, Rob Parry, now at scrum half, added his power to the drive and dived over in the corner.
There was now no stopping the champagne rugby and ex-marine Gareth Williams came to the fore, his power and pace split the host's defence before side stepping the full back and cantering between the uprights. This was followed closely by a perfect training park move, seeing Gordon in full flight for another great team try.
The forwards dominated in the tight, the front row of Joe Greenslade, Lewin and Timmy Dowle, playing against medical advice, had the hosts in all sorts of trouble in the scrum. From a five meter scrum they shunted the opponents back at a rate on knots and Worthington benefitted with a simple pick to fall over the line unopposed.
A few chances went begging as Bognor over played their hand, the most blatant miss of the day was when ex Wasps full back Richard Hay spotted Sargent on the wing, his pin point cross kick only had to be collected, but the giant carpet fitter stumbled over his own feet and found himself face first in the mud and the chance went begging.
Bognor did however save the best till last. Deep in their own in goal area they spread the ball, Johnston dummied his way past several defenders and great handling along the back line found Barry Mitchell thundering down the wing, as he was clattered in the tackle, his off load was perfect for first team manager and pensioner Roger Hammond to jog round under the posts for a brilliant try and to go down as Bognor’s oldest try scorer in the club's 46 year history.
